PHYS 424       (3-0-3)            Elementary Particles Physics


Particle physics:  data and objectives.  Dirac equation, anti-particles.  Elementary group theory: invariance & conservation laws.  Strong interactions: baryons, mesons, resonances, strange particles.  SU(3) and Quarks.  Flavour & colour.  Weak interactions:  Parity violation.  Ko-K decay, CP violation.  Current-current interaction.  Cabibbo angle. Gauge invariance - Global and Local.  Outline of standard electro-weak model.  Gluons and QCD. Qualitative treatments of renormalization & asymptotic freedom.  Electron-positron collision: charm, bottom, top.


Prerequisite: PHYS 401
